AboutUs

The Children’s Center, the second oldest non-profit on Hilton Head Island, SC.,

the first being the Bargain Box thrift store, was founded in 1967 by community leaders Reverend Isaac Wilborn and Billie Hack. Mrs. Hack founded the Bargain Box thrift store as well. The Bargain Box has partnered with the Children’s Center since our inception and provided strong financial and mission support for our tuition assistance program.

Without such support the Center could not fulfill its mission year after year. Rev. Wilborn and Mrs. Hack, understood that all children, whatever their economic situation, have the same needs: caring, guidance and safety. They knew that if those needs were met, children can move forward productively and happily. The Children's Center is one of the highest impact pre-school early learning programs in our community.

For nearly four decades, The Children’s Center has quietly and profoundly affected the lives of thousands Hilton Head Island children. Each day, the lives of over 250 children are touched by a remarkable staff, each of whom understands just how important their work is. Through the years, the Center has grown from serving fifteen children to more than two hundred and fifty.

The Children’s Center, Inc. is not a government-funded agency and therefore relies heavily upon the resources provided by local individuals, organizations, and foundations, including United Way of the Lowcountry, Inc.and The Bargain Box. It is with the support of the local community that the Center is able to open its doors each morning to our families.
